Facilities

Photos of Bei Gao, Downtown Apartment and Beijing Art Academy Studio

Bei Gao

Red Gate's two studio/apartments are set in an old factory site situated on the north side of Beijing. The site has been converted into a series of studios and apartments, an exhibition space, a ceramics studio, workshops and foundry facilities, offices and a canteen. It is a congenial and fun environment where Chinese and foreign artists are living and working together. The community is enlivened by many informal activities and frequented by many visitors.

Red Gate's main facility is an 80 sq. m space consisting of a large upstairs loft style bedroom/living area with an internal balcony overlooking a 30sq.m workspace. A bathroom and open kitchen are tucked under the internal balcony. Two 5-metre high walls flank the workspace with more than adequate lighting.

A second 100 sq. m studio/apartment consists of bedroom, large living space and larger work area.

Each studio/apartment is self-contained complete with ISDN phone, hot water, fridge, gas stove, washing machine, heating and air conditioning and adequate kitchen gear, furnishings and linen. Utilities and weekly cleaning are included.
Sharing with another artist is quite practical.

Downtown Apartment

Red Gate leases a number of modest one-bedroom apartments in Chinese housing on the east side of Beijing close to the Beijing Art Academy, and the embassy and business districts. These apartments are situated in very local neighbourhoods allowing the resident to experience the traditional and modern flavours of Beijing ¨C in many cases you will be the only foreigner on the block. Each self-contained apartment has a lounge room, kitchen and bathroom with all amenities including fridge, washing machine, air conditioner/heating, gas cooking facilities, hot water, linen and local phone. Utilities and weekly cleaning are included.

Studio

Red Gate has arranged to use a number of studios at the Beijing Art Academy that provide a simple 15sq.m workspace. The studios are located within a three storey building which includes heating, air conditioning, bathrooms and canteen.

Orientation Information

Red Gate assists all participants to connect with the art scene, local artists and to source art materials. We can help you set-up an internet account, buy a SIM card, obtain money, show you around, and how to get a taxi home, where to buy the best Peking Duck, which part of the Great Wall not to go to, and where the latest openings are. You will be invited to all the Red Gate events including the dinners for 40 after an opening, the artist talks and the Bei Gao BBQs!
Partners and visitors are welcome.

Transportation and Shopping
Bei Gao is a 30 minute cab ride (40 RMB) from Red Gate Gallery in central Beijing and the Beijing Art Academy and nearby apartments are 20 minutes to Red Gate (15 RMB). Each area is serviced by shops and other retail outlets.

Visas and Language
We can advise you on the best way to apply for the appropriate visa.
Although Chinese (Mandarin) would be useful, it is not necessary. Although Chinese artists do not have much English, there is always someone to help out. When needed interpreters and assistants can be sourced.

About

Red Gate Gallery has been exhibiting the work by outstanding contemporary Chinese artists for almost 12 years. Representing 25 artists, Red Gate showcases a diverse range of subjects which reflect China's changing society. As records of their observations on daily life, artists are exploring political, economic and cultural transformation - issues all highly relevant in our global society, but brought into sharp focus by the pace of China's change. Through traditional Chinese painting, collage, printmaking, installation, new media and oil painting Red Gate's artists are supplying a social commentary on contemporary Chinese society.

Beijing Art Academy is a non-teaching institution for senior artists. It was founded in 1957 as the Beijing Academy of Chinese Painting by the Ministry of Culture to continue the development of Chinese Painting after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. In 1965 the institution changed to its current name and expanded its scope to include oil painters, sculptors and graphic artists. The Beijing Art Academy also holds exhibitions and its staff includes some of China's most respected artists. In the past ten years, the Academy has received a number of foreign artists and continues to develop international arts exchanges with partners such as Red Gate Gallery.
